The SaltShip 46 “Explorer” is a collaboration between renowned New Zealand designer R.J. (Bob) Salthouse and his son D.J. (Don) Salthouse, with the aim of offering a very spacious, sea kindly and rugged pilothouse style trawler.

This new Salthouse design is an offshore capable pilothouse with a beamy (5.2m) fuel efficient semi-displacement hull form, available in varying styles from fly-bridge cruiser to the  “wind assisted” and water and fuel ballasted  offshore model, giving longer range cruising, get-home capability and increased stability while saving up to 30% in fuel on long passages.

This new concept vessel is capable of cruising 2340 n. miles on her own bottom with a single reliable  John Deere, Lugger  or Scania diesel, with options for twin engine or back-up propulsion, and stabilizing via either sails or hydraulic power driven systems.

With two double cabins and two large dinettes (saloon and cockpit el fresco) sleeping up to 10 people if required, the aim is to provide a great live-aboard cruiser for extended cruises ranging from offshore island hopping to exploring the Med and the canals of Europe.

This is the culmination of Bob Salthouse’s 50 plus years of designing and building more than 670 boats,  and Don Salthouse’s 31 years as a leading NZ marine broker as well as combining input from the Salthouse family’s strong yacht racing background and a lifetime of cruising New Zealand’s testing coastal and offshore waters.

Flybridge Cruiser Model
This ever popular configuration comes with an elfresco dinette in the cockpit for lounging in a bay plus the spacious bridge with internal access from the wheelhouse and a second el fresco dinette with aft seating that converts to a sun bed and the option of either a hardtop or bimini covers.

Cockpit
Most trawler style vessels have an aft deck without the comforts of built in seating which seems a great waste as this is the area you spend most of your time when anchored in a bay. The El Fresco dinette has been one of the most popular features on Salthouse boats for many years now and coupled with the option of an outside toilet and shower is just so practical for everyday cruising. The wide open transom is designed so the tender can simply be pulled in through the door with the outboard still affixed for bay hopping or shorter trips, and when venturing further afield the tender is stowed atop the aft end of the bridge and a heavy duty GRP stern gate with scuppers is droped into place locking off the transom but still allowing the rapid evacuation of water in the rare event of a wave breaking over the transom. Stainless Steel rails and safety lines give protection on the boarding platform where most of the fishing is done so even without the stern gate the crew are protected.

Saloon and Galley
Utilizing a proven saloon layout admired on many pilothouse  designs worldwide we have situated the galley forward and to port with an L shaped dinette aft, with the option of either tub chairs or a settee suite which can convert to a double bed on the starboard side.

Accommodation
A luxurious master stateroom forward features an island queen sized bed with a second cabin to port with twin singles converting into a huge double bed for guests. The option of a third pull out double in the saloon will handle any overflow and of course the saloon and cockpit dinettes provide good single berths as well. When at sea the low centre of gravity and water and fuel ballasting will reduce the motion in the saloon making it ideal for off- watch crew to relax and sleep.
