Norseman 447

This well proven and comprehensively equipped Norseman 447 has just arrived into New Zealand after an awesome cruise from Seattle to Mexico then through the South Pacific islands, finally arriving into Opua. With a lovely hand-crafted teak interior and an owners aft cabin with ensuite, she’s a great live-aboard cruiser with so many excellent features, loaded with so many extras, and she’s ready to cruise off on your adventures. This popular Robert Perry designed centre cockpit cutter rigged sloop was built in Taiwan in 1985, being hull number 53 out of 80 produced, with a major refit carried out in 2010 in Seattle which included fitting a new Yanmar 75hp turbo-charged diesel, new standing and running rigging, Spectra water maker, Heads/hoses, a new hard dodger, Technautics Freezer, new main & jib, cabin sole refinished, saloon upholstery/cushions replaced etc…
Additional work in 2016-2017 included new aluminium fuel tanks, new SS chain-plates, new dodger clear panels and sail covers, Windlass overhaul, new batteries, new 300 ft HT anchor chain, spade anchor, new lifelines, Awl Grip/Griptex deck paint. This sleek design with robust construction combines speed and overall performance in a blue water passage maker. The boat was fresh water moored in Lake Union, Seattle, for last 3 years before her 18 month cruise from Seattle to New Zealand, with excellent maintenance and care.
The centre cockpit is well set up for blue water sailing too with a solid dodger and clear screens for shelter plus an aft bimini top sun shade and wheel steering, plus there are self-tailing winches, binnacle compass, and good instrumentation. The Hull is hand laid moulded fiberglass alternating mat and woven roving (lay-up schedule/specs by Bob Perry, and all original factory owner’s manuals and factory order information from new). The decks are uncluttered and there is plenty of room for the tender to stow during passages, with the life raft mounted near the mast, plus a clip-on Solant style inner forestay with hank on #2 jib.
The saloon dinette with a solid teak table, teak and holly flooring and plenty of storage room including book shelves has a warmth and elegance to it. The Taiwanese are master craftsmen with teak using solid teak on most of the doors and trims which is very enduring and gives a rich character. The keel stepped mast adds a mot of strength.
The galley is aft of the saloon and to port with good refrigeration and a lovely big stainless steel gas oven with plenty of bench space for preparing meals.
Safety features built in include good hand rails and hand holds throughout the boat. The Captain’s office or nav station as it’s called is opposite the galley and well set up too with radios and electrical switch panels in close proximity. The desk in the Nav Station is great for keeping up with the office work and emails with a decent swivel chair back to it.
The Yanmar 75 hp turbo diesel fitted in 2010 is easily accessible and well maintained with water lock muffler, oil changing pump and powers the vessel easily.
The owner’s private stateroom has plenty of storage, light and space to relax away from guests and crew. With opening portholes and overhead hatch with solar ventilation built into it the cabin is well positioned aft away from anchor noises. The owner’s stateroom has an ensuite bathroom (heads) to port with its own shower. There is also a vanity with mirror in front of the double bed for the beautification of the crew.
The aft deck is set up with dingy davits off the push-pit, solar panels on the aft rails to charge the batteries, a magma stainless steel BBQ, and a lifting crane for the outboard motor to make it easy to lift it off the tender and on to its mount on the aft railing. Everything is ordered and well thought out, even a decent cooler or chilly bin ready for the fish you’ve caught.

The popularity of offshore cruising in the South Pacific is growing year by year with such great destinations like Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia plus Australia only 1100 miles away which in a lovely yacht like this is a bit over a week’s sail. There is a huge advantage in buying a boat which has been tried and tested and is well proven on offshore passages, so you can get straight into the fun part of exploring the beautiful tropical islands. Having cruised myself for the last 4 years from June until late October, I can attest to the life-changing experiences you’ll have, and can also highly recommend this solid, well built design which will give you safety and comfort in a stylish classical design from a renowned naval architect like Robert Perry. I have huge admiration for the Taiwanese boatbuilders having project managed a build recently of an 80ft motor yacht, as they have all the skills, infrastructure and suppliers or top equipment with a really good work ethic too.
